Raui te pare Kauiti, held knowledge of Maori medicine and healing, had also been previously expelled from his village.
Raui decided to take on the challenge of finishing the incomplete and abandoned construction of the Are Karioi (house of entertainment) in the hills of Aitutaki, perhaps to restore his reputation?
In this painting, Raui contends with his fellow builders on the solution to support the long roofing beams (approx.70 ft) that caused its previous builder to abandon the project.
The fame of the Are Karioi and the renowned dancing and drumming that took place there reached other areas of the wider eastern Pasifika groups and even hosted voyagers from those islands.
